We are delighted to be offering an extraordinary and rare jewelled enamel orchid brooch, designed by Paulding Farnham for Tiffany & C, in our December jewellery auction which will take place on the 16th and 17th.
This brooch is one of twenty-four orchids designed by Paulding Farnham for the Tiffany & Co. Paris Exposition in 1889. The orchid brooches were so highly admired for their beauty that they sparked the protection and cultivation of these rare exotic plants. Farhham joined Tiffany & Co’s designers in 1879 and worked for them until 1908, becoming the chief designer and director of the jewellery division in 1893.
The appeal of this rare brooch is the remarkable botanical accuracy. The brooch is modelled on the rare tiger orchid and was drawn from life after blooms were sent from South America. He revolutionised floral designs by injecting a new level of naturalism.
